ISO 45001
Every day, thousands of workers are killed or injured in workplace accidents. Many employers don't pay attention to workplace safety and health despite the fact most of these incidents can be avoided. Implementing an OH&S Management System is therefore crucial. The new ISO 45001 standard provides an excellent framework for creating and maintaining these systems.
The ISO 45001 standard uses the same high-level structure that is used in other management system standards like ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, making it easier to implement and integrate. It also considers that OH&S requirements differ from industry to industry. For instance, workers in construction have different OH&S requirements than those working in pharmaceuticals. The standard is flexible, allowing companies to design a program that is suited to their specific needs.
Although certification isn't mandatory, it's a great way to show your company is committed to security and safety of employees. It will also help improve your company's reputation and boost its image as responsible business. It will also help you save money, by reducing the number of injuries and insurance costs.
There are seven clauses in the standard, but the most significant ones are the Clauses 1 to 3. You must identify your OH&S requirements and develop a policy. You should also consider the risks your business faces and take steps to reduce the risks. You should also make sure that your employees are properly trained and equipped to prevent accidents. You must also communicate to your employees and stakeholders the importance of health and safety in the workplace. This can be done by meetings, presentations, or newsletters.
